Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Screening
Unsure if your child needs a full assessment? Start here.
At Steps and Stones Psychology in Blackwood, we understand that committing to a full diagnostic assessment is a significant emotional and financial decision. You may be asking: “Is this just a phase?” or “Do these behaviours really indicate autism?”
Our ASD Screener is designed to answer those questions. It provides a professional, low-risk investigation into your child’s developmental patterns to determine if a full diagnostic assessment is clinically warranted.
Investment: $500
Assessment Pathway Credit: We believe in a stepped-care approach. If your screener results indicate that a Full Diagnostic Assessment is recommended and you choose to proceed with us, the fee paid for this screener will be credited towards the cost of the full assessment.*
This allows you to start the investigation process with confidence.
*Terms & Conditions: The assessment credit applies when a Full Diagnostic Assessment is booked within 3 months of receiving your Screener Report. The credit is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash.
Is this a Diagnosis?
Important Distinction: No. This is a preliminary investigation, not a formal diagnostic assessment.
- The Goal: To gather clinical data and give you a professional opinion on whether your child displays enough traits to justify a full evaluation.
- The Outcome: You will leave with clarity on whether to proceed with a diagnosis or if your child’s challenges are likely due to other factors.
The Screening Process
Unlike a simple online quiz, our screener is a clinical process conducted by a Registered Psychologist.
Step 1: Initial Clinical Interview
We meet with you (parents/caregivers) to discuss your child’s developmental history, social skills, and the specific behaviours that are causing concern.
Step 2: Standardised Questionnaires (ASRS)
We use evidence-based screening tools, such as the Autism Spectrum Rating Scales (ASRS). To get a complete picture, we gather data from:
- You (the parents).
- Your child’s teacher or childcare educator (where relevant).
This ensures we see how your child functions in different environments.
Step 3: Analysis & Report
Our Psychologist reviews the interview data and scores the questionnaires against clinical norms. We compile this into a Summary Report that outlines the findings and indicates the likelihood of ASD traits.
Step 4: Feedback Discussion
We invite you back for a post-assessment discussion to talk through the report. We will clearly explain:
- What the scores mean.
- Whether a full diagnostic assessment is recommended.
- Alternative support pathways if ASD is unlikely.
Why Choose the ASD Screener?
1. Clarity Without the Full Cost
A full multidisciplinary diagnosis is a large investment. This screener allows you to "dip your toe in" and get a professional opinion for a fraction of the price ($500).
2. Financial Safety Net
We believe you shouldn't pay twice for the same information. By crediting the screener fee towards a full assessment, we ensure your money is well spent.
3. Holistic View
By involving teachers or childcare educators in the questionnaire process, we ensure we aren't just relying on what happens at home. We look at your child’s social functioning in the real world.
Who is this best for?
- Parents who are “on the fence” about whether their child is autistic.
- Families who want a second opinion before committing to a full assessment.
- Parents whose school has suggested an assessment, but who haven’t seen the behaviours at home.
